Scholarship
To be considered for the Service Learning Scholarship, you must meet the following qualifications:
- Participated in service learning for a class or student club at NWACC
- Have a 2.5 cumulative grade point average
- Enrolled at NWACC in the subsequent academic year for the fall and/or spring semesters
- Must not be a dual enrollment or ECE student
To apply for the Service Learning Scholarship, an essay and recommendation from an NWACC faculty or staff member are required. The essay and the recommendation should respond to the questions in the prompts below.

Essay Prompt
Write 250-500 words on the following questions.
- What did you do in your service learning project?
- How did you take ownership over various tasks and how did the group dynamics work in your service learning project?
- How did it benefit the community in your service learning project?
- What did you learn in your service learning project?
- How were your values impacted by your service in your project?
- How did your service learning project connect you more to NWACC and/or the broader community?
- How did your service learning project give you greater abilities or desires to work with others?
- How did your service learning project make you want to connect to your community more?
- How did your service learning project give you a different perspective on your vocational or your academic path?
- How did your service learning project help you reflect upon and learn ideas from the classroom?
Additional Questions
- Will you be a student in the subsequent academic year? How many credit hours will you be taking in the Fall and Spring semesters? When do you plan on graduating?
- How many hours did you spend doing your service learning project? When did you do your project?
Faculty/Staff Recommendation Prompt
Write 250-500 words on the following questions.
- How do you know the student?
- How long have you known the student?
- How did you learn about the student’s service learning work?
- How did completing service learning impact the student personally or academically?
- Did the student’s service learning work demonstrate leadership, soft skills, community improvement, critical thinking, humanism, different forms of literacy, mathematics, programming, graphic design, marketing, creative arts, research methods, scientific inquiry, sociological imagination, carpentry, building or writing? How so?
- How good is this student in terms of their academic abilities, character and perseverance?

Awards
Every academic year, the following awards are given to students doing service learning during their time at the college. NWACC faculty and staff can submit nominations using the online form. Nomination deadline is May 1, 2023 at 11:59 pm.
Leadership Award: This award goes to an NWACC student who demonstrates leadership abilities in a service learning project in the fall and/or spring semesters, or their time at the college. Leadership includes directing, assisting and uplifting others towards a common goal, modeling civil and thoughtful responses to others, representing NWACC to the community, and trouble-shooting and innovating the service learning project.
Professor Huggard Award: This award is named after the former NWACC Service Learning Coordinator and Professor of History Chris Huggard and goes to an NWACC student who demonstrates a propensity for learning combined with service to the community in a service learning project during the fall and/or spring semesters, or their time at the college.
Partner Award: This award goes to an NWACC faculty or staff member or community member who contributes the greatest success and insight as a partner for a service learning project in the fall and/or spring semesters. This award may also be given to faculty that create a service learning project exclusive to their class.
Professor Phillips Award: This award is named after the NWACC EMPACTS Coordinator and Professor of Science Dianne Phillips and goes to an NWACC student that demonstrates the greatest service to the natural world, most innovative application of the scientific method, and/or best use of a mathematical technique within a service learning project during the fall and/or spring semesters, or their time at the college. This service learning project may or may not be an EMPACTS project
Exceptional Contribution Award: This award goes to an NWACC student who completes at least 50 hours of service learning and makes a positive impact on the community during the fall and/or spring semesters, or their time at the college.
