Service Learning

As an NWACC student, Service Learning offers you the opportunity to serve the community, learn, and reflect on experiential learning activities and projects that take place through classes or student clubs.

The community service component includes serving the NWA area or the NWACC community and may occur in partnership with a business, nonprofit or governmental organization. This community service does not include working with political parties or religious communities, except when a charity is part of the religious community and the volunteer work advances charity rather than theological purposes.

The learning component advances a course or program's objectives while giving assessment credit and includes learning about the world and gaining skills through volunteer projects directed by student organizations and academic honor societies.

The reflection component can include journaling, paper writing, blogging, vlogging, presentations, class or group discussions, activity decompressions, artwork, poster-boarding, or private individual reflections.

Benefits of Service Learning

After you complete a service learning project, you will be recognized as a service learning scholar on your transcript. Those who participate in service learning projects tend to have a competitive edge when applying for scholarships, for acceptance into four-year universities, and in the job market.

Service learning credit can be earned within the curriculum of a professor's offerings in a class or earned individually outside of classwork. For the latter qualification, please contact Dr. Matt Evans.

Paperwork

As a participant in service learning, you must complete paperwork and keep track of your volunteer hours throughout a service learning project. To access the paperwork, email sl@nwacc.edu.
